Hip Flask
02:38
|
|||
i keep a few people close
but i keep my hip flask closer
i keep a few people close
but i keep my hip flask closer
that way i know i’ll have a friend
when all of this is over
a woman is a changing thing
but my hip flask stays true
a woman is a changing thing
but my hip flask stays true
i know i can count on my hip flask
but i ain’t so sure about you
open up the lid
drink a swallow down
try to find the strength to tell you
i know you’ve been running ‘round
i keep a few people close
but i keep my hip flask closer
that way i know i’ll have a friend
when all of this is over

Happy When I'm Down
04:01
|
|||
I try and try and try to make you love me.
I sacrifice without a second thought.
I tell myself you’re thinking fondly of me,
even though I know you’re probably not.
I labor sadly unappreciated,
doing things I know I shouldn’t do,
but until my inner masochist is sated
I’d prefer to get my punishment from you.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to be a pity-hog.
Truth is I’m happy when I’m down.
I want to be your stooge, I want to be your dog.
Don’t hesitate to throw my heart around.
I’d profess my love from atop the highest hill.
I’d write your name up in the sky.
I’d recite “What light?” beneath your windowsill:
anything, my girl, to catch your eye.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to be a pity-hog.
Truth is I’m happy when I’m down.
I want to be your stooge, I want to be your dog.
Don’t hesitate to throw my heart around.
Feel free to spread the word all over town:
I’m at my happiest when I’m down.

Princess Of The Suburbs
06:58
|
|||
emmeline shuffles squinting in the sun to get the paper she's a princess of the suburbs
resplendent in her housecoat and slippers
turning from the mailbox, she stops along the way
sees a new car, much nicer than her car
in the neighbor's driveway
she'd keep going but she hasn't got the heart
she'd keep going
back inside with the headlines, it's a festival of funerals emmeline can't help but wonder
how men can be such animals
speaking of animals, there’s six hours till her husband's plane gets in
she fixes breakfast fit for a princess —
a bottle of vodka and a bottle of vicodin
she'd keep going but she hasn't got the heart
she'd keep going but she wouldn't know how to start
and just like her there's a million emmelines
a million husbands a million planes
a million punches thrown in the middle of a million fights
a million princesses in chains
twenty after seven, he comes home with his suitcase and golf clubs
finds the surprise of his life
sprawled motionless over the side of the bathtub
she's scratched out “i don't want this” on the shower door in the soap scum
emmeline, princess of the suburbs, has given up her kingdom

Stanley Park
05:24
|
|||
I went down to Stanley Park.
I saw the snow on the mountains,
but as I looked out on the dirty harbor
I couldn't help but think,
"Which way to the ocean?"
I visited the tanks.
I saw the whales and the dolphins,
but as I looked into the eyes of the biggest one,
I thought I heard her say,
"Which way to the ocean?"Which way to the ocean?
I want to swim up to Alaska.
I want to play in the Sea of Japan,
and now it looks like I might never get the chance again."
I knew what to do.
I dove in on a mission,
and as I swung the gate wide open
I swam aside and said,
"This way to the ocean. This way to the ocean!"

Three Cheers And A Tiger
04:34
|
|||
i guess you figure that you're over me.
i guess that would explain the look of glee.
you say you've got yourself another man.
you say he loves you better than i can.
you’re so happy now that you've hooked up with someone new.
well, three cheers and a tiger for you!
i guess i should have bought you some more stuff.
i guess that i just wasn't rich enough.
you say he buys you lots of pretty things.
you say he gives you gold and diamond rings.
you finally found a man who's made of money through and through.
well, three cheers and a tiger for you!
hip, hip! hooray! hip, hip! hooray!
sweet fancy moses!
hip, hip! hooray! hip, hip! hooray!
everything’s coming up goddamn roses!
i guess you think you make the perfect wife
i guess you think you’ve got the perfect life
maybe i am only just a dunce
but maybe you have got it wrong for once
i ain't gonna be around when he leaves you blue
still three cheers and a tiger for you all the same!
three cheers and a tiger for you!

Chains Of Steel
05:08
|
|||
You can look but you can’t touch
You can want her but not too much
You can try but it’s no use
You can’t shake the shackles loose
She lives alone in a castle made of smoke
Where no-one dares to go
Where love cannot grow
She stands alone weighted down by chains of steel
Unsure of what’s real
Too far gone to feel

Nothing Worth (Outtake)
04:23
|
|||
Have you noticed it’s getting colder?
The days are getting shorter
Winter’s almost here so cuddle up my dear
We’ve had our share of grief, babe
But now there’s just relief, babe
I’m so proud to say this time I’m here to stay
Nothing worth having don’t make you work to get it
Let’s bite our thumbs at the weather
Why don’t we curl up together?
We won’t make a fuss – a little snow won’t bother us
Who knows where those clouds are headin’?
It’s the perfect night for a bed-in
We’ll put our PJs on – I’ll be Yoko, you be John
Nothing worth having don’t make you work to get it
